2027 Inca Trail Permits Are Coming - Book Your Trek Today!

This 4 day trail to Machu Picchu is the most famous hike in South America, with thousands of trekkers walking it every year. Although it is only 42 kilometers long, trekkers often refer to this Machu Picchu trek as the "Survival Trail." The ancient Inca Trail winds up, down, and around the mountains, crossing three high passes along the way.

The views of snowy peaks and cloud forests are breathtaking, and walking from one cliff-hugging ruin to the next is a mystical and unforgettable experience. However, you’ll rarely have a moment of solitude to fully enjoy these views.

Why Book the Inca Trail 2027 in Advance?
It is very important to book your Inca Trail 2027 tour in advance, especially this year. According to the new Machu Picchu regulations, you must secure both the Inca Trail permit and an additional Machu Picchu entrance ticket.

The most recommended route to visit Machu Picchu is Circuit 2, which offers the best views of the Inca Citadel.

Inca Trail: Quick Information

You cannot hike the Inca Trail independently. All trekkers must go with a guide as part of an organized group through a licensed tour operator. The tour operator must have official authorization to operate on the Inca Trail and other Inca routes, as well as alternative treks to Machu Picchu. You must carry your original passport (not a photocopy) and, if you are a student, your ISIC card to present at checkpoints.

Do not litter, defecate in the ruins, or pick plants in the national park. Graffitiing trees or stones along the route is illegal.

Gear and Preparation

Although some operators do not include camping gear, specialized companies like Salkantay Trek Machu provide everything needed. Since temperatures drop quickly when the sun goes down, make sure your sleeping bag is for high mountains. In your backpack, you must have:

  • Footwear: Sturdy trekking shoes that have been used before.
  • Protection: Rain clothes, sunscreen, and bug spray.
  • Tools: Flashlight with new batteries and water purification tablets.
  • Health and energy: High-energy snacks, a basic first aid kit, and Peruvian coins (soles) for small purchases or tips for the support team.

Travel Seasons

The Inca Trail receives visitors all year, except in February, the month when the path closes for full maintenance. If you plan to travel between December and April, keep in mind that rain can make the paths slippery and clouds might limit the panoramic views. On the other hand, the dry season (from May to September) offers clear skies, making it the most popular and crowded time of the season.

Important: Since it is already the year 2027, permits for the months of May, June, and July usually sell out quickly. If you plan to travel on these dates, we recommend checking real-time availability with your agency.

Inca Trail Tours 2027

If you have plans to hiking the Inca Trail during this year, you are at the key moment. The official system for 2027 Inca Trail booking was enabled at the end of October last year, and due to the huge interest, many of the dates for the high season (May, June, and July) already show limited availability.

Prices Inca Trail Permits 2027

Remember that the strict limit of 500 daily permits stays the same, of which only about 200 are for tourists, while the rest is for the support team (guides, cooks, and porters).

Important changes in the regulations

According to the newest rules, it is vital to keep in mind that the Inca Trail permit must now be managed together with the specific visit circuit in Machu Picchu. Make sure your tour operator manages both the route permit and your Machu Picchu entrance ticket at the same time to avoid problems at the entry control.

Quality and Sustainability

The government has strengthened the measures to protect the trail and the working conditions. When choosing your agency, consider that tour costs reflect the annual fees and taxes that operators must pay to keep their license. Choosing agencies with extremely low prices usually means compromises in the quality of the camping equipment or in the fair treatment of porters.

Tips to secure your spot

  • In advance: It is recommended to book at least 6 months in advance if you want to travel in the driest months.
  • Flexibility: Have a second start date ready in case your main option is already sold out at the time of purchase.
  • Confirmation: Once your reservation is made, check that all your passport information is correct, as permits cannot be transferred and do not allow changes of date or owner.
Note: We are in the middle of the rainy season. If you have your trip scheduled for these months, remember that the paths can be slippery and it is essential to have shoes with high traction and good waterproofing.

Inca Trail Route Explained: What Each Day Looks Like

The classic Inca Trail is hiked in 4 days and 3 nights, combining tough climbs, mountain passes over 4,000 meters, and archaeological sites that can only be visited by walking this route. Below, we explain the journey day by day, with the distances, altitudes, and key points of each section.

Day 1: Km 82 (Piscacucho) – Wayllabamba

Most tour operators take passengers in a minibus to the start of the trail, passing through the town of Chilca to Piscacucho (km 82). After crossing the Urubamba river and completing registration and fee payments, the trail climbs with a gentle slope along the river to the first archaeological site, Llactapata, and then heads south through a valley of the Kusichaca river. From there, it is 7 km to the Wayllabamba camp (3,100 m), a usual rest spot with a view of the Veronica snow-capped peak (5,750 m).

Facts about the first day:

  • Distance: Approximately 12 km
  • Altitude: From 2,700 m (Piscacucho) to 3,100 m (Wayllabamba)
  • Walking duration: Between 5 and 6 hours
  • Difficulty: Low to moderate, it is the smoothest day of the whole trek
  • Archaeological site of the day: Llactapata

Day 2: Wayllabamba – Pacaymayu (the toughest day)

On the second day, you leave the camp in Wayllabamba and cross the Llullucha river, then a steep climb begins along the riverbed, in the area known as Tres Piedras, with an especially pronounced climb of 3 km. The trail continues along the high slope of Llulluchapampa; from there, a two-hour trail leads to Warmiwañusca (4,198 m), known as Dead Woman's Pass and the highest point of the whole trek. Then comes a steep descent, hard on the knees, down to the river, where the wide camps of Pacaymayu (3,500 m) are found.

Facts about the second day:

  • Distance: Approximately 11 km
  • Altitude: From 3,100 m (Wayllabamba) to 4,198 m (Warmiwañusca), with descent down to 3,500 m (Pacaymayu)
  • Walking duration: Between 7 and 9 hours
  • Difficulty: High, it is the hardest day of the entire Inca Trail
  • Key point of the day: Warmiwañusca (Dead Woman's Pass), the highest point of the route

Day 3: Pacaymayu – Wiñay Wayna (the longest day)

On the third day of the trip, after leaving the camp, the trail crosses the river over a small footbridge and climbs toward Runkurakay, a circular ruin, at about an hour's walk. Further up, the trail climbs to a viewpoint before continuing along two small lagoons toward the top of the second pass (3,900 m), with views of the Vilcabamba Mountain Range. From there it descends to the ruins of Sayaqmarka, an archaeological complex on the mountain, and continues crossing a tributary of the Aobamba river.

The trail goes through an Inca paved road and climbs again through cloud forest and a tunnel carved into rock to the third pass (3,670 m). Shortly after, you reach the ruins of Phuyupatamarca (3,600 m). From there, the descent into the cloud forest is made via a long Inca staircase of hundreds of steps, until reaching (after crossing a tunnel) Wiñay Wayna, where there is a lodge with hot water showers and food and drinks for sale for those who want an extra.

Facts about the third day:

  • Distance: Approximately 16 km
  • Altitude: From 3,500 m (Pacaymayu) to 3,900 m (second pass), with final descent to 2,650 m (Wiñay Wayna)
  • Walking duration: Between 8 and 9 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate to high, it is the longest day in distance.
  • Archaeological sites of the day: Runkurakay, Sayaqmarka, and Phuyupatamarca

Day 4: Winay Wayna – Machu Picchu

From the Wiñay Wayna checkpoint, the trail skirts cliffs among cloud forest for about two hours to Intipunku (the Sun Gate), where you get the first view of Machu Picchu before sunrise. The final descent to the citadel takes about an hour. Large backpacks are not allowed into the ruins: control staff checks them and stamps the access ticket. Those who arrive at this time usually avoid most of the visitors arriving later by train, enjoying fewer crowds along the way.

Facts about the fourth day:

  • Distance: Approximately 6 km
  • Altitude: From 2,650 m (Wiñay Wayna) to 2,720 m (Intipunku), with final descent to 2,430 m (Machu Picchu)
  • Walking duration: Between 2 and 3 hours
  • Difficulty: Low, it is the shortest day of the whole trek
  • Key point of the day: Intipunku (Sun Gate), first point with a view of Machu Picchu

Here some information you should take into account to book your Short Inca Trail:

  • The month of February is the rainy season, so the Ministry closes the Inca Trail, either the 4 Day route or the Short Inca trail.
  • The spaces found are for any route, either Short Inca Trail or the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days.
  • Availability is managed exclusively by the Ministry of Culture. Only they can administer and authorize access to the Inca Trail.
  • The availability we show you is the same for any other agency, because this information is directly from the Ministry of Culture.
  • The number of Short Inca Trail Permit is very variable. Agencies usually reserve up to 30 spaces, do not be surprised if at one time the available spaces are sold out.
  • The Short Inca Trail is enabled only for 300 spaces per day, which includes spaces for staff.

We strongly recommend that:

  • The Inca Trail of 2 days is an alternative to the Classic Inca Trail of 4 days, but now that the tickets for this have been sold out, it is now the most requested in the months of APRIL to SEPTEMBER, so we recommend that you book your Short Inca Trail Permit early.
  • The availability of Wayna Picchu (Huayna Picchu) is also very limited and easily runs out in the months of APRIL to AUGUST, then, if you want to make tours that include this destination, we recommend that you make reservations well in advance.
