Machu Picchu Tickets 2023: The Ultimate Guide For Your First Visit

Today, visiting the wonder of the world Machu Picchu is the best experience, but if you don't want to be disappointed, we recommend you book in advance, and don't wait until the last minute to book your Machu Picchu tickets. There are only 4000 tickets available each day and 1000 tickets available in Aguas Calientes town, but for this last option, you should make a line early morning (3:00 am) until 9:00 am, when the ministry of culture will open their offices and once you arrive at the counter. they will give you tickets available between 10:00 to 12:00 pm, in case it is sold out, you will need to stay an extra day.

A visit to the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru is the absolute highlight for many travelers! No wonder the tickets are in great demand. Over 1.5 million visit Machu Picchu every year! This means an average of around 4,500 tourists per day.

In the past, there were even more! For this reason, the Peruvian government had to limit the number in order to protect and preserve the site for future generations. And that's good.

Therefore, there are many new rules that you should read carefully here!

Machu Picchu Tours 2022 & 2023

Unfortunately, there are still far too many tourists at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Worse still, many don't follow the rules. So we very much welcome the changes made by the Peruvian government to limit and regulate the flow even further.

If you book your Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu tickets in advance, you will feel lucky that you are able to visit the sacred mountain of the Incas. While other travelers will be waiting to get the tickets at the last minute.

Machu Picchu New rules 2023

As of March 1st, 2021, a number of significant new rules have come into play with the aim of getting Machu Picchu off of UNESCO’s naughty list and becoming more sustainable - further significant changes were then made when the site re-opened in 2022.

Some of these measures were long overdue and will hopefully better preserve the site and stave off the symptoms and impact of overtourism, however they may prevent you from experiencing the site exactly how you hoped if you don´t understand and prepare for the changes ahead of your visit.

The advantages of planning your Machu Picchu adventure yourself:

  • Machu Picchu is the focus: It is of course a great way to end a long tour, but you should really have all the time and peace you need to explore this extraordinary place.
  • You don´t have to hike: Maybe you don´t like hiking, you just got injured or you have problems hiking at altitude. Even if the Inca Trail is described as moderately difficult, one should not underestimate the thin mountain air and the additional effort. After all, it is more than 40 km of route, almost continuously between 3,000 m and 4,000 m and that with changing weather conditions and cold.
  • More flexibility: The Machu Picchu tours are usually fully booked six months in advance. You can also implement your own trip very spontaneously. You can also make your own schedule.
  • Less acclimatization time: For the Inca Trail and most other tours you should acclimatize in Cusco for a few days before you start. Of course, this means that you have to plan much more time for your Machu Picchu adventure. It's more practical if you drive directly to the highlight, have less effort and only have to acclimatize for a short time.
  • Train ride with a panoramic view: Without a tour you travel by train to Aguas Calientes and get a great view of the Sacred Valley of the Incas (Urubamba Valley), dotted with Inca ruins and Inca bridges.
  • It is much cheaper: The prices for the tours are really extremely high. And you should keep in mind that the tours do not include accommodation in Cusco. In addition, it is customary to tip at the end of the tour, which increases the total price even more. While accommodation in Aguas Calientes and train travel aren't exactly cheap either, you'll beat the tour prices quite a bit if you plan your own trip to Machu Picchu.
