Keep in mind that there is no direct bus from Cusco to Machu Picchu, so you will have to make some stops along the way.

The Inca Trail is the most famous hike to reach Machu Picchu, accessing through the Sun Gate or Intipunku. Other hikes include the Short Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trail, Lares, Choquequirao, and Huchuy Qosqo.

Traveling from Cusco to Machu Picchu by Train

Traveling by train to Machu Picchu is the easiest, fastest, and most comfortable way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu. The train ride from Cusco to Machu Picchu takes on average about 3 hours. Trains depart from several stations, including San Pedro, Wanchaq, Poroy, and Ollantaytambo and wind through the stunning Sacred Valley before arriving at the town of Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu Mountain.

 

Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) is the final stop for all trains, regardless of which company you travel with. From Aguas Calientes, passengers must take a bus to the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. Buses leave every few minutes and the journey takes about 25 minutes.

  • Trains from Poroy to Machu Picchu
    Poroy station is located about 40 minutes by car from the center of Cusco and is the second furthest after San Pedro. All trains that depart from San Pedro also stop at Poroy, allowing passengers to board there if they prefer. The journey from this station takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes and offers beautiful views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

  • Trains from Machu Picchu to Poroy station
    Trains returning from Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) to Poroy depart in the afternoon and take about 4 hours to arrive. From Poroy, you will need to make an additional 40 minute transfer by vehicle to Cusco. This option is convenient for those who wish to return to the city on the same day of their visit to Machu Picchu, although it requires additional logistics.

 

The Best Trains from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu (and Back)

Ollantaytambo train station is the most used to travel to Machu Picchu, both for its strategic location in the Sacred Valley and for the speed of the journey. From Cusco, it can be reached by car in approximately 2 hours, making it a comfortable and efficient option for travelers.

  • Trains from Peru Rail: Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Pueblo
    To board the train, it is advisable to arrive at the station at least 30 minutes in advance. The train journey to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes) takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes. PeruRail offers different types of trains from this station, including the Expedition (economy) service and the Vistadome (panoramic).

  • Trains from Inca Rail: Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu

    The journey begins from the Inca Rail office on Av. El Sol, where buses depart for Ollantaytambo. Passengers can choose to arrive by taxi on their own or hire a service with pickup from the hotel. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, the transfer by train to Machu Picchu takes place.
A fact to consider: The route from Ollantaytambo is especially recommended for those taking a Sacred Valley tour, as they can visit the Inca ruins there and then continue directly to Machu Picchu on the same day, without having to return to Cusco.
