The lush vegetation covers one of the deepest and most astonishing canyons on the planet: the Colca Canyon, an imposing place where the condors of the Colca Canyon reign, absolute lords of these blue skies. Like true monarchs, condors are often elusive and do not always allow themselves to be seen easily; but, suddenly, they emerge majestically, soaring very close with their enormous wings.
On other occasions, they are barely distinguished as a distant dot over the mountains. Even so, every morning, numerous travelers visit the Colca Canyon Peru, waiting with their cameras ready and contained excitement, hoping to spot the imposing Colca Canyon condor.
In addition to being a refuge for the emblematic Andean condor, this magnificent place has been included in the list of the 100 Sustainable Destinations in the World, a recognition that fills Arequipa and the rest of Peru with pride. This certification, granted by the prestigious organization Global Destination, highlights not only the beauty of the area, but also the sustainable tourism that is developed in the region.
The organization emphasizes that the Colca Valley, where the canyon is located, is a territory dedicated to preserving and valuing both its cultural identity and its extraordinary natural diversity. Since 1995, thanks to its impressive landscapes, the depth of the canyon, and being an essential habitat for condors, tourism has been promoted in this valley.
The Colca Canyon shares its place on this prestigious list alongside world-renowned destinations such as the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador), the city of Kyoto (Japan), the town of Vail (United States), and the island of Saba (Netherlands).
For his part, Winder Anconeira, manager of the Autonomous Authority of Colca (Autocolca), indicated that this award will allow Arequipa's canyon to be further positioned in the international tourism market. He also congratulated the Collagua and Cabana communities for preserving the rich cultural manifestations of the place, promoting experiential tourism together with local tour operators, to offer an authentic experience in the heart of the Colca Valley.
